sunburn

so while at the race i got sunburned. we forgot the sunscreen and didn’t think we had enough time to go back and the sun wasn’t shinning so i didn’t think anything about it. Man, was I wrong. It’s been a long time since i’ve been burned this bad..most of the soreness to touch is gone but today the itching started and it’s about to drive my crazy.

I’m hoping to get a chance today to post some screen shots and a tutorial on creating a fun motion background

indy 500 tickets

So i promised to talk about the tickets and here it is briefly. I got the tickets as a Christmas gift, but at the time the tickets had not been purchased, and so not to set myself up for failure I didn’t get my hopes up about going to the race. I decided when the tickets where bought then I would get excited. Jesus started showing me through this how much this has marked my life that people have let me know and I’ve applied this same characteristic to him. Jesus has been tearing down a lot of the old criticalness that still tries to be part of me. It was surreal when my friend told me my gift and it’s still surreal even now when I’m leaving tomorrow to go to the race. There is still plenty more work Jesus wants to do in my heart about the reserve I have when it comes to lavish gifts, and I’m ready for it and it’s going to be hard work that I really want to do so that I can be transformed to react more like Jesus.

We are leaving saturday hopefully early so we can make it to Indy and watch the church service live on the web with Scott’s family.  I’ll post more about this later it’s amazing.

Video Switching Take 1

So like every thursday night we have our Arts practice to get ready for the upcomming weekend. I got a call before practice that our switcher would be unavailable due to working late, and was asked to fill in for the night. Which was a great gift, I love getting to switch whenever possible. Through this i’ve learned how much leadership is involved in calling shots.

Whoever is switching the camera shots (Technical Director) is also calling the shots ahead of time as well. And were practicing our opening worship and I’ve never actually directed a whole practice so this was loads of fun. The leadership things I noticed were as the switcher is you have to make sure your people on camera know which camera they are on. Example is last night one of our usual camera 3 (roving camera) operators was on camera 1 (camera on tripod), and occasionally he would forget that he is camera 1 because he’s use to being on camera 3 all the time. During a few instances he would forget when I would call camera 1 so then i would need to remember to call him by name so that it would register which camera he is operating. This was also an interesting challenge because one of our headsets was malfunctioning so our Video Director was fixing the headset and Camera 2 was unable to hear me call for shot adjustments. With this comes making sure to dispense grace and not talking down to the camera operator. If I talk to camera 1 in a negative town then this leaves room for the enemy to creep in and take away from the joy of getting to serve on camera, so making sure to love the camera operator is extremely important in helping the person remember which camera they are located on.

Also, last night we are in the middle of a set take down so the people on stage are not where they typically are and there was no back lighting on the talent so this added some complexity to the night. As i’m directing I’m also making sure to dual track and talk to Jesus to give me the right shots to make this look great because I want to serve with excellence. This is not perfection, we are prone to make mistakes, excellence is getting to do the best with can with the help of Jesus so that on Saturday and Sunday people are able to enter into the service and not be distracted by the IMAG but instead it adds to the service allowing the walls that people may have built around their heart come down. If someone is coming for the first time and they see great camera shots, lights, music, etc then it takes away from any criticism they be wanting to use to allow them to not hear the message Jesus has designed for them but instead allow them to enter in and receive what Jesus has for them that day, which is the most important thing. If Jesus were to say don’t do IMAG we would drop it in an instance to make sure people can get a clear picture of Jesus and respond to it. I don’t have a doubt that anyone I serve with or the people on staff at the church would have a different opinion. It’s a gift getting to do IMAG and so as the switcher I get to help people see things they may not see from their seat or may not notice that is happening during the service.

This is all for take one, I’ve already wrote a lot and my lunch break is almost over and will soon need to get back to work. Stick around for more things I’ve learned from switching in a later post.

About Me

So I was working on adding some links on the right hand side and realized that I really haven’t mentioned a lot about me so here is some general information.

Name: David Slone

Town: Lexington, KY

Church: Quest Community Church

Volunteer Roles: Web Team, Video Team, DVD Duplication, Men’s Integrity at The Mat on Friday nights.

Web Team: In short I take what a designer makes pretty and I make it work. I’m currently learning/programming in Ruby On Rails. I also get to help launch things on our Internet Campus as well.

Video Team: This was my first serving opportunity and I had no training other than a desire to let Jesus use me however he can and I’m still amazed at what he has given me the gift to be part of. I started out as a graphics operator and was the sole operator for a while, I then transitioned to a camera operator, and I now do a lot of editing videos in Final Cut Pro, creating motion graphics in After Effects, creating series countdown timer, video bumps (video that is played before the speaker walks on stage to allow a transition between the music and the message), and every so often I get to 3D compositing. Some of my latest work here was in our imagine2 dvd that we produced I created a 3d globe that would have a light coming out of it and rippling across the world. As I create elements in the future I will post a link to them so you can see them and give me any pointers on how to do things better in the future.

I love getting to volunteer and let Jesus use my gifts so that people far from Jesus can enter into a relationship with him and be transformed into a wholehearted follower. It’s a gift getting to do what I do.

It’s almost over

I forgot to hit post my battery ran out when i was done so here is a post from during the fast.

———–

Well the fast is almost over. I can’t believe it. I am amazed at how Jesus has sustained me because I thought I would be starving to death right now. I’ve been able to focus on why I’m doing this and it’s allowed me to overcome food.

I realize that I may have never fully explain why I’m fasting. The Lead Pastor Pete put it out there for the leaders of the church who got to go first with their commitments last week to fast for the people turning in their cards this week, and he also opened it up to anyone else on Wednesday that wanted to attend. Jesus spoke clearly to me that I could do this because he wanted to give me clarity on my number and so that I could help prepare the way for others like myself who will be turning in their commitment cards.

So with all that I’ve had an amazing time with Jesus. I got to turn in my card during the Saturday night service and I was amazed. I walked into the room running a little late as always because I was working on video stuff (which one day I will start posting about some video stuff we do maybe next series) and I walk in the room and there are maybe 10 people sitting down and they had just turned in their cards. Words could not describe what was happening. One of the great lines that Pete said during this weekend services was “The risk of stepping out was high but the risk of not stepping out was higher” And it was amazing to see people taking a risk.

Simply amazing. Only Jesus could do something like that. And next week we have he ground breaking of the new building and we get to hear the total amount commited by the entire church

24 hours

So i’ve been fasting for 24 hours now, I never thought I could make it this far. Food had become such a priority in my life that I’ve put on a significant amount of weight over the past couple years. Jesus has been doing some great work in my heart the past 24 hours.

I’m pumped about tomorrow I get to turn in my Imagine 2 commitment card and take a huge step towards living a generous life and going to war with selfishness. With my commitment Jesus is giving me the gift of getting to sell my car and find a cheaper car, so that I can give more money towards imagine2. This is going to be an incredible journey.

As a side note we got the keys to the new house yesterday and I started moving some stuff into the house yesterday mostly just some clothes and a few other small things. I’m hoping I can move my bed tonight but we will see how that goes.

This is a small update of the many to come through the fast and once it’s over Sunday afternoon, I’ll post an update on all that Jesus has been doing in my heart through this.

The Fast Begins

So Friday at the end of lifegroup my leader mentioned there will be a fast starting thursday at lunch and Jesus immediately said you get to do this so that I can reveal your Imagine 2 commitment. I was pumped and scared at the same time.  I’ve never fasted for more than a lunch and that was hard, but I know Jesus has called me to this and I get to do this which is a gift and at the same time I get to do this for the people around me that will be turning in their commitment cards. If sacrificing food for a short time is what Jesus wants to do in me so people who are far from him can find a real relationship then it’s worth it. I’ll keep posting about my journey through this and what Jesus is doing in my heart, it’s going to be amazing and nothing short of it. The leaders have already commited 6.9 million towards Imagine 2 and now I get to step up and sacrifice my resources so we can make room for more people to know Jesus.
